10257 A0320 Miscellaneous Collection     A Man Is Standing With A Gun At The Site Of The "Reference Monument" Raised By David Thompson (British) On July 24 (Or 29), 1824, On The Most North Westerly Point Of Lake Of The Woods. The Surveyors Had Great Difficulty In Finding That Spot. This Site Was Designated By Treaty Of Ghent As Key To Boundary Between British North America (Canada) & The American States (Usa). The Site Was Endorsed By The Joint Boundary Commissioners On October 26, 1826. In The Formal Search By The Boundary Commission Of 1872, The Remnants Were Found In A Swamp On October 17, 1872 And The Famous Corner Was Commemorated As Shown Beside The Man. Murray, Daughter Of Chief Factor A.H. Murray, And They Had 4 Children; In 1890 To A Daughter Of Chief Factor Mctavish. Bedson Came To Canada As A Non-Commissioned Officer With The 16th Regiment. On The Regiment Being Recalled He Remained In Montreal. In 1870 He Came West With The Wolseley Expedition. When Wolseley Returned East Bedson Remained In Charge Of Prisoners At Lower Fort Garry. In May 1871, He Was Appointed Warden Of The Manitoba Penitentiary, Which Was Located At Lower Fort Garry Until 1876, And From That Date At Stony Mountain. In 1885 He Was In Charge Of The Transport Service For The North West Rebellion. He Was An Avid Sportsman. In February I891 He Went To Ottawa As An Adc To The Governor-General And To Serve On The Alaska Boundary Commission. During 1873 and 1874 an Anglo-American commission surveyed and marked the boundary between Canada and the United States from Lake of the Woods to the Rocky Mountains. The trails and the supply depots established by the boundary commission were used by the NWMP on the first part of their trek westward in the summer of 1874. Among the personnel shown are: Captain D.R. Comeron (seated 3rd from the left) the British Commissioner; L.W. Herchmer (standing 4th from the Left) the Commissions Commissionary who was later commissioner of the NWMP from 1886-1900; and G.M.
